Emergency Medical Technician / Paramedic

Education Needed

Some programs are designed as a part-time study model, whereas others are organized as full-time collegiate curricula. Instruction dealing specifically with emergency medical care requires anywhere from 600 to 1,000 hours of instruction, the variation largely owing to the availability of actual emergency care incidents through which the student may acquire supervised clinical practice experience.

Successful completion of a course of training for EMT-ambulance and evidence of certification as an EMT-ambulance are the principle prerequisites for entrance into the EMT-paramedic program. In those programs offering a combination of EMT-ambulance and EMT-paramedic training, the clinical, didactic, and supervised practice portions of both programs must be completed before the EMT-paramedic student begins the required field internship.

Salary

Earnings of EMT’s depend on the employment setting and geographic location as well as the individual’s training and experience. According to the Journal of Emergency Medical Services salary survey, average salaries were $25,051 for EMT- Basic and $30,407 for EMT – Paramedic. EMT’s working in fire department’s command the highest salaries.

Career Outlook

Competition for jobs will be keen in fire, police and rescue squad departments because of attractive pay and benefits and good job security. Opportunities are expected to be excellent in hospitals and private ambulance services. Employment is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations through the year 2006. Much of this growth will occur as positions change from volunteer to paid positions. Many job openings will occur because of this occupation’s substantial replacement needs.

Duties

Emergency medical technicians-paramedics, working under the direction of a physician (often through radio communication), recognize, assess, and manage medical emergencies of acutely ill or injured patients in pre-hospital care settings. EMT-paramedics work principally in advanced life-support units and ambulance services under medical supervision and direction.

Work Environment

EMT-paramedics work both indoors and outdoors, in all types of weather. Much of their time is spent standing, kneeling, bending, and lifting. The work is not only physically strenuous, but stressful-not surprising in a job that involves life-or-death situations.
